New cars are filled to the brim with electronics that control everything, from lowering your windows to keeping your kids quiet with a SpongeBob DVD. Researches at UC San Diego and University of Washington found that thieves were developping new skills to keep up with the automobile market. It is possible to hack those systems to gain control over the car and some thieves are specializing in it.

The newer models of cars house over 100 computers that lock your doors, start the car, control the radio. Many of these systems are interconnected. Hacking the sytem makes it much easier to steal a car. No brake cutting, no messy wires everywhere. New wireless features that help you out also make it possible to attack the system without being in the car itself.

It’s true that we haven’t really heard much when it comes to renewed security protocols for car manufacters. Makes you think.
