I must admit that I was pretty excited by the yesterday’s Apple keynote. Especially because of the numerous rumors concerning the new iPod Touch generation – that I was seriously considering to get – : some people were saying that 2 cameras would be part of that new device – with HD video recording and HQ pictures, just like the iPhone 4 – , retina display- just like the iPhone 4 – , more storage, a new look, 3G connection, A4 core, and many more! I didn’t believe half of those rumors, especially the one concerning the 3G connection. Yesterday Steve Jobs unveiled the beast and finally put an end to those speculations: A4 core, retina display, 2 cameras – with face time and HD video recording - and some kind of a new look, along with IOS 4.1. So, is there any reason to be happy with that announcement?

Well I  was quite confused yesterday. The retina display seemed to be the same as the iPhone 4 one, but it is not, it has a good resolution (960 by 640 px at 326 px per inch) but it’s not IPS and We can clearly see that it is not as beautiful as the iPhone 4 display. The 2 cameras – even if it’s great news – are VGA quality for the facing one and less than 1 MP for the camera at the back: We’re far away from the iPhone 4′s 5 MP. The new look – even if I like it – is not bringing anything new and remains highly ”scratchable “. Also, it pushed Apple to put a bad camera at its back – I would have preferred a bigger iPod and a better camera.

Those informations were already bad news to me, but I’m not done. The new iPod Touch’s capacities are 8, 32 and 64 GB, nothing new here actually, except for the death of the 16 GB version. No higher capacities or clouded storage as many commentators were hoping. Even more shocking, the prices are higher than the last Gen: 8 GB – 229$, 32 GB – 299$ and 64 GB  - 399$. Even worst for Europe – I guess Apple is applying, as usual, the same prices than in the US, plus the exact European (and national) taxes amounts -, which means 239, 309 and 419 €!

At the end, the new iPod Touch generation brought a lot of new additions, but Apple missed a huge opportunity to smash every other competitors. I can understand why Apple decided not to bring too many new additions: to keep its amazing iPhone’s highly profitable source alive and healthy.

I may pass on that one!

[Update]

First reviews finally hit the web few days ago. They confirmed my first impressions: the new iPod Touch is a nice device, surely one of the best of its kind. But, the display is not as good as the iPhone 4′s one – which is a shame, cause the iPod Touch is meant  to be a multimedia device. And the cameras are really bad… The video shooting looks good though. The baterry life seems significantly improved. Go check the Engadget’s review.

Also, Ifixit opened the beast. They discovered – oh surprise – that its internals are very similar to the iPhone’s 4 ones. Same A4 core, same front facing camera, … They also found a powerful 3.44 Watt-hours battery.
